DURHAM , NC Rev. Travis Styles, 84, of 1829 Front Street, passed away at his daughters home on Tuesday, July 31, 2007. Travis was born in Alabama on December 21, 1922 and is preceded in death by his parents David Edgar Styles and Addie Travis Styles and his brother, Marlin C. Styles. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Bernadine, and three children, Tom Melanie of Pace, FL, Jo Oakley Steve of Durham, NC and Kelly of Long Beach, CA. Also surviving is one brother, Leland, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews. Travis was a World War II veteran having served with the 28th Infantry in Germany and France. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and other commendations. He graduated from Howard Samford College and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary at Wake Forest, NC. He also attended Georgia Southern College, St. Bernard College in Alabama, and the School of Pastoral Care in Winston-Salem, NC. During his 60 years in the ministry, he served as pastor to churches in Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina, including Mt. Vernon and Trinity in Raleigh, Grove Park in Burlington and First Baptist in Andrews. He retired from the First Baptist Church in Andrews, NC. and moved to Cullman, Alabama where he joined the staff of the First Baptist Church working with senior citizens. He was an active member of the Harding-Singleton Sunday School Class. Upon returning to North Carolina, he was honored by Grove Park Baptist Church by naming him Pastor Emeritus for his twenty years as pastor there. He also served on the Home Missions Board as well as two terms on both the General Board and Executive Committee of the NC State Baptist Convention. He was inducted in the Alabama Hall of Fame for his service to Senior Citizens. Travis also for years was an active Civitan. Visitation will be held at the Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory in Burlington on Thursday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Gene Hunsinger, Pastor and Rev. Charles McMillan at the Grove Park Baptist Church on Friday at 11:00 AM. The family will also receive friends at the Cullman Heritage Funeral Home in Cullman, Alabama on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with a chapel service following at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. Jimmy Baker. Graveside services will be held at the Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery following the chapel service. Pall Bearers will be members of the Harding-Singleton Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church of Cullman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Duke Home Care & Hospice, Attn: Donations, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Durham, NC 27704 or to the Lottie Moon Offering at the Grove Park Baptist Church, 108 Trail One, Burlington, NC 27215.
