Robert Keith Black, 96, passed away peacefully at his residence on Saturday, September 6, 2025. He was born on July 9, 1929 in Guilford County. Robert was an remarkable individual whose presence enriched the lives of those around him, and he will be profoundly missed.
As a retired professor of art at Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, North Carolina, Robert dedicated many years to nurturing the creative spirits of his students. His passion for painting and art history shone brightly, and he imparted his knowledge with kindness and encouragement. Robert's educational journey began with a B.S. degree in Biology from Wake Forest University, a foundation that later led him to explore his true calling in art. He studied Painting and Art History at the University of Georgia and continued to sharpen his craft at Ohio State University. His artistic journey also took him to Parsons School of Design in New York City, where he further developed the skills that would define his legacy.
In addition to his accomplishments in art, Robert served his country honorably as a World War II Army Veteran. His military service was a testament to his character, instilling in him values of courage and commitment that he would carry throughout his life.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Robert found joy in painting and sculpting, creating works that not only expressed his inner vision but also invited others into a world of beauty and reflection. He cherished traveling to Europe, and his fondness for Venice stood out amongst his adventures, as it was a place that inspired him deeply.
He shared his life with his beloved husband, Jesse Sanderson, with whom he had a loving partnership for sixty years, celebrating nine years of marriage. Together, they created a nurturing home filled with love and laughter. Robert's gentle spirit was complemented by the unconditional companionship of his beloved canine friend, Sherona, whose loyalty and affection brought him comfort and happiness in his later years.
Robert has now been reunited with his parents, Charles Spurgeon Black and Inez Keith Black, who watched over him from afar and instilled in him the values that defined his life.
