Roderick Crenshaw

Roderick Lawrence "Red" Crenshaw, age 84, of 1667 Wheeler-Bridge Rd., after fighting a battle with Alzheimer's for over ten years, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on November 6, 2010 at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a week of critical illness. Born in Greenville County, SC, he was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin Crenshaw, Sr. and the late Margaret Jane Martin Crenshaw and was married for over 64 years to the late Elsie Lashley Crenshaw, who passed away in January of 2010. "Red" was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served in WWII, where he received a Purple Heart for being wounded in action. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after many years of service and was of the Presbyterian faith. "Red" was always ready to help his friends, family and neighbors in any way he could. He loved cooking, woodworking, and was an avid golfer and especially enjoyed playing at his favorite course, Shamrock Golf Club. He had several occupations in his lifetime and he mastered them all, he could do anything he set his mind to and he never met a stranger. He was the best "Daddy" in the whole wide world. Mr. Crenshaw is survived by two daughters, Jerry Ann Powers and her husband, Paul, of the home and Peggy Jo Vickers of Whitsett; a grandson, Larry Raymond King, Jr. and his wife, Sherri; and a great grandson, Roderick Lawrence "Rick" King all of Burlington; two sisters, Colleen Ward and her husband, Max, of Graham and Betty Jean Best of Haw River; and a brother, Robert "Bobby" Crenshaw of Arvada, CO. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; a sister, "Winnie" Sue McDaniel; and five brothers, William Rudolph Crenshaw, James "Buss" Crenshaw, Wiley "Mutt" Crenshaw, Jack Crenshaw and Benjamin Franklin Crenshaw, Jr. A celebration of "Red's" life will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Chaplin Barry Hersh. Interment will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8:30 Tuesday evening at the funeral home and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation, 2200 W. Main St., Suite A200, Durham, NC 27705 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215. Mr. Crenshaw's family would like to extend a special thanks to the staffs of Ashton Place and Hospice, especially Sue and Janet, for all their loving care and attention to "Red".
