Ruby Thompson Cates, 90, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Friday October 26, 2012 at The Hospice Home. She was born August 12, 1922 in Alamance County to the late Edwin Herbert and Sarah May Thompson. She had retired from Kayser-Roth Hosiery and later worked for Zayre. Ruby was a member of the First Baptist Church of Burlington and she had taught the first grade Sunday School for over forty years. She was once honored as the Alamance County Volunteer of the year. She devoted her life to Christ and epitomized the "golden rule". With a heart of gold Ruby Cates was always there for anyone who needed a helping hand. Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Gardner of Murphy, NC, Connie Hart of Gibsonville, sons, Roger Kathryn Cates of Greensboro, Don Cates of Mocksville, twelve grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her late husband Wallace B. Cates, parents and siblings, C.W. "Snooks" Thompson, Inez Brown, N.R. "Jake" Thompson, Marshall Thompson and Kenneth "Bud" Thompson. The funeral will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday October 30, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Burlington by Dr. Terry Peele. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Monday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. and at other times at the residence.
