Sarah Neal Currin, of Burlington, NC passed away peacefully on May 21st, 2026. She was born on June 9th, 1949 in Williamston, NC. Sarah Neal was preceded in death by the love of her life, John Gray Currin, Jr. whom she was married to for 48 years.
Sarah Neal grew up in Williamston, NC where she spent her childhood alongside her sister, and best friend, Suzanne Jones Smith. She left Williamston to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. It was during her time at UNCG that she met her lifelong friends, the “Shaw Hall Girls.” During her time at UNCG she studied Home Economics, and would later become a teacher in Guilford, and Alamance counties. She also spent many years by John’s side during his tenure as COO, and later CEO of Alamance Regional Medical Center.
The true joy of her life was her children, and grandchildren. The highlight of her golden years was spent on her beloved Crystal Coast, surrounded by her 5 grandchildren. A true Eastern NC girl at heart, she was always there to bait a hook, apply sunscreen, and ensure all life jackets were safely secure. She will be greatly missed for her sense of humor, joyful demeanor, and great hugs.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Gray Currin, Jr., dear son John "Gray" Currin, III, her parents Ernest Cornelius Jones and Jennie Rhyne Jones. She is survived by her loving daughter Jennie Rhyne Hendrix (Zane) of Winston-Salem, NC; 5 grandchildren, Jack Currin, Nora Currin, Sarah Cate Hendrix, Watt Hendrix, and Ty Hendrix; her sister Suzanne Jones Smith(Richard), her nephew Scott Smith (Lori), and her niece Allison Smith.
