Sue Morton McAteer

Sue Morton McAteer, 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 20, 2026 at the AuthoraCare Collective (Hospice Home). She was born in Alamance County on November 9, 1942 to the late Edward Lee and Helen Morton McAteer.

Sue was a longtime member and former deacon of First Reformed United Church of Christ. She was a graduate of Williams High School and received her nursing degree from TCA (Alamance Community College). For 20 years she worked as a Registered Nurse at Kernodle Clinic, Alamance County Hospital, Memorial Hospital and Burlington Family Practice. On her days off, she could also be found helping her brother and parents at Roxie’s Florist.

Survivors include her nephew, Bray Loy McAteer and wife Julie, great nephew, Julian Ace McAteer and sister-in-law, Jane Loy McAteer. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Edward F. “Eddie” McAteer and nephew, Edward F. “Lin” McAteer, Jr.

Sue loved her family fiercely and never missed an opportunity to let them know it. Her nephews were truly like her own, and she celebrated every accomplishment, offered endless encouragement, and was always there with a hug or a listening ear. Then came her great-nephew, Ace, who completely stole her heart. He was her little buddy, her pride and joy, and the brightest light in her life. The smile on her face whenever she was with him said everything.

Nursing was more than a profession—it was her calling. She had a servant's heart and found great purpose in caring for others with kindness and grace.

She will also be remembered for her storytelling and wonderful sense of humor. She loved to laugh, loved making others laugh, and had a way of finding joy even in difficult moments.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to loving friends and compassionate medical staff throughout the years and AuthoraCare Collective for the exceptional care, comfort, and kindness they provided during her final days. Your support will never be forgotten.

A private service will be held at Pine Hill Cemetery.
