Burlington – Tobie Baughn, 90, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at the Hospice Home surrounded by his family.  He was born in Rockingham County on February 24, 1934 to the late William Henry “Bus” Baughn and Myrtle Kellam Baughn and was the husband of 70 years to Betty Cobb Baughn of the home.

Tobie or “Pawpaw” as he was affectionately known, served in the US AirForce as a Master Sergeant, retiring as a disabled veteran after 20 years of service. He enjoyed telling stories about his military experiences and sharing memories with other vets. Tobie served many years in the Philippines, Thailand, South Korea and Germany shortly after WWII and served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was also involved with the Air Command during the Cuban Missle Crisis.

Tobie enjoyed traveling, spending many summer vacations at his lake house at Belews Lake and nearly 10 years traveling up and down the coast in his camper. He grew up on the river discovering his love for swimming and would later display his athletic prowess in the Senior Olympic games. It was there he and his wife would bring home numerous medals in events like duck bowling, swimming, softball and table tennis to name a few. Beyond his love for military and traveling, he cherished time spent with his kids and grandkids.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; sons, Donald Michael “Mike” Baughn (Carol), Steven Baughn; daughter, Patsy B. Gentry; seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and brothers, Larry Baughn (Reba) and Michael Baughn.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard, Tommy, Johnny and Rev. Dr. James “Duke” Baughn and his canine companion “Max”.

A service to celebrate Tobie’s life will be held at 4:00PM on Sunday, March 24, 2024 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel with military honors to follow.  The family will receive friends from 2:45 – 3:45 prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home.
