Victor Alan Cates, 72, passed away peacefully at his home in Graham on November 10, 2023. A native of Alamance County, Alan was born on November 1, 1951 to the late Mary “Snooks” Freeze Cates.  

Alan dedicated 27 years of service to the Alamance County Sheriff's Department. Rising through the ranks, he eventually retired as a respected Lieutenant Detective. Even after retirement, Alan's passion for investigative work remained strong as he continued to contribute his expertise as a Private Investigator.

As a man of faith, Alan touched the lives of many with his commitment and compassionate nature. He had a unique gift for making people laugh and possessed an incredible talent for storytelling leaving his family and friends cherishing the joyful memories they shared with him.

One of Alan's favorite pastimes was cheering for the Carolina Tar Heels. With a love for sports, he actively participated in various athletic endeavors throughout his life. His love for sports extended beyond being a fan; he also enjoyed playing different sports and coaching his sons' baseball teams during their youth.

Above all else, Alan cherished spending time with his family and friends. His soul mate Melissa Foucher stood by his side through thick and thin, providing unwavering support and love.  Alan will be deeply missed by his sons Toby Scott Cates (Jenny) and Glenn Alan Cates (Brandy), step-daughter Katelyn Stephens (Austin), grandchildren Tanner Cates, Mickey Cates, Mallory Cates, as well as his brother Steve Cates. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews who held a special place in his heart.  He was preceded in death by his mother; Mary “Snooks” Freeze Cates and a sister; Ann Cates Turner.  

Friends and loved ones are invited to pay their respects at the visitation on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 from 2:00 - 3:00 PM at Alan's home. The family is planning a private memorial service to celebrate Alan's life.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to AuthoraCare Hospice; 914 Chapel Hill Rd. Burlington, NC 27215
