Walter Lee Coggins, 75, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on October 15, 1948 in Alamance County to the late Clarence Dolphus Coggins and Clara Inez Chatman Coggins, and was the husband of 52 years to Wanda Marie Mills Coggins who survives.
Walter retired after 27 years with Cone Mills. He was a US Army veteran during the Vietnam War and was in the National Guard. Walter attended Altamahaw Baptist Church and was a former member of Temple Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting in Colorado, fishing, camping, old cars, collecting antique cannons and knives, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Survivors other than his wife, Wanda Mills Coggins include his grandchildren that he adored, Trisha Marie Howard and husband Lucas, and Jacob Smith; his brothers, Barry Coggins and wife Penny, Clarence “Pete” Coggins and wife Brenda; several nieces and nephews; and his canine companions, Roxie and Max. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Lynn Marie Coggins Smith.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at Temple Reformed Baptist Church (formerly Temple Baptist Church on Lang St.) by Rev. Walter Jones, with the burial to follow at Haw River Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm Tuesday evening at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the residence.
