Walter Terrell Apple, 78, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15, 2025 at the Hospice Home surrounded by his family. He bravely battled cancer for over 20 years, supported by his loving wife, Tyron “Spooky” Apple.

Walter was born on July 29, 1946 in Caswell County to the late Walter Everette Apple and Maggie Harris Apple. He grew up on a farm with lots of land and plenty of animals, under Carolina blue skies. He drove a tractor at home and the bus to his tiny school, ferrying his fellow classmates.

His professional journey began at Burlington Industries where he worked in I.T. Shortly into his career, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War where he received a Purple Heart. While serving, he showed courage and perseverance that continued throughout his life as he faced the effects of Agent Orange exposure.

He returned to Burlington Industries for an impressive 35 years, serving as an I.T. Supervisor. During that time, he also graduated from Elon University. After retiring, Walter spent another decade at UNC Greensboro as a night shift I.T. Supervisor. He was always a night owl and answered many calls from his children during these late hours.

Walter found joy in simple moments—playing golf, traveling, working in his yard, and most importantly, spending quality time with his loved ones. He enjoyed eating watermelon and watching incoming thunderstorms, a pro at the grill, he snored like a bear and could wiggle his ears on demand. Walter meticulously researched and planned every decision, from what shoes or cars to buy, to where to stay and what to see on every trip. He gave great advice; he could fix all kinds of things and build things. Walter was able to sit quietly and comfortably for long stretches, people were naturally drawn to his calmness. His wry laughter and warmth will be missed deeply by all who had the privilege of calling him family or friend.

Survivors include his tenacious wife, Tyron "Spooky" Robertson Apple. During 44 years of marriage, he loved, supported and respected her. She was the social butterfly to his wallflower. He’s also survived by his son, Eric Terrell Apple and his wife Karin Starr, as well as his daughter, Heather Marie Apple and her husband Andrew Shoemaker. He was so proud of his children and he told them often. They are grateful to have inherited his sense of humor. His legacy will live on in his grandchildren, Caden Apple, Elin Apple, and James Shoemaker, who brought immense joy to his life and who he adored dearly. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous cousins and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts. His family is so thankful for their kindness.

The family is planning a celebration gathering from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Thursday evening at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to AuthoraCare, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

His kindness and love will never be forgotten by his family and friends, who will continue to celebrate his life and the countless memories they created together. You may send condolences to www.lowefuneralhome.com.
