Whitsett Wayne David Shepherd, age 71, of Whitsett died Thursday afternoon at Alamance Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Whitsett, he was the son of the late L. B. and Mozelle Clay Shepherd and husband of Beulah Burgess Shepherd who survives. In his early years, Wayne was co-owner of L.B. Shepherd Radio &TV in downtown Burlington. After many years of service, he retired from the Burlington City School System. Years ago, he was a regular on the local drag racing circuit, especially Piedmont Drag Strip and after retirement, he still loved tinkering with old cars, gardening and watching any and all forms of racing and car shows on his satellite TV. He served several years in the National Guard. Wayne was a loving husband, a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Beulah Burgess Shepherd; daughter Sharon S. Pugh of Sophia; son Wayne David Shepherd, Jr. and wife Susan of Whitsett; grandsons, Brandon Curtis and wife April and Ryan Shepherd; great-grandchildren, Zyan and Kaleb Curtis; sister, Arlene King of SC and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday February 27, 2006 in the Lowe Funeral Home chapel by Dr. Benjamin F. Williams, pastor of Piedmont Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. Mr. Shepherd will remain at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory through the funeral service.
