William Crawley "Billy" Maxwell

     William Crawley "Billy" Maxwell, age 95, a cherished figure in both his professional and personal communities, passed away peacefully at his residence on October 19, 2025, after several weeks of failing health. Born on December 31, 1929, in Cumberland County, North Carolina, Billy led a life rich with achievements, love, and a deep commitment to service.

     Billy was the owner and operator of Maxwell Volkswagen Volvo Subaru from 1966 until his retirement in 2014. His passion for the automotive industry was further exemplified by his significant contributions to various organizations. He was a charter member of the National Independent Automotive Dealers Association and served as President of the Alamance County Automobile Dealers Association. Additionally, he was an active member of the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Volkswagen Dealers Association, the Board of Small Business Association of America, and was Vice-President of the Exchange Club in Fayetteville. His dedication to his work and industry was recognized and respected by colleagues and competitors alike.

     An esteemed veteran of the United States Air Force, Billy’s service to his country was a proud part of his identity. Beyond his professional commitments, Billy was a longtime member of Grove Park Baptist Church, where he served on the Long Range Planning Committee. His sense of community and family was reflected in how he viewed everyone he met as a friend.

     An avid golf enthusiast, Billy and his wife, Beverly, enjoyed many wonderful trips to their homes in North Fort Myers, Florida, and Myrtle Beach. These hobbies brought him joy and created lasting memories with family and friends.

     Billy is survived by his three children: Dick Maxwell (Cecille), Terry Maxwell, and Karen Spangler (Howard); four grandchildren: Mendie Timberlake (Todd), Kristan Clemmons (Cody), Britt Maxwell, and Brandon Maxwell; five great-grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. He is also remembered fondly by his brother, Jack Maxwell (Alice Ann). The family extends special thanks to his three wonderful caregivers: Angie, Ann, and Alice, who provided exceptional care during the last two years.

     Billy was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Beverly Joyce Maxwell; his parents, Britt Dickson Maxwell and Myrtie Crawley Maxwell; and his brother, Dickie Maxwell. His absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew him.

     A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at Magnolia Cemetery by Rev. Mike Mitchner. The family will receive friends at the residence following the service.
