Ellen Smith Gerner Hicks, 88, passed away suddenly on July 3, 2021 in a car accident.

Ellen was born December 21, 1932 in Guilford County to the late Marvin Monroe and Lillian Mable Clapp and was married to the late Connie Gerner.

Ellen retired from Kmart, where she worked in the apparel department. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was very hardworking and loved to cook for her family.  Later she passed the time by working word searches and watching the soaps.  She had great joy in other’s happiness and sacrificed a lot for her family. She dearly loved family gatherings.  She will be greatly missed by all her family and “adopted family” and friends.

Ellen is survived by her son, Connie Michael Gerner; daughter, Rhonda Gerner Myrick; grandchildren: Tony Eugene Greeson and girlfriend, Ruth Ann Freeman, Kristina Ellen Greeson, James Reid Myrick, Jr., and Ryan Miles Gerner and wife, Amanda; ten great grandchildren: Dylan McCraw, Dana Greeson, Tony Greeson, Khaydija Poole, Elizabeth Moore, Sandi Gerner, Luke Gerner, Bristian White, Reed Gerner and Ashland Spainhour; two great great granddaughters; sister, Louise Thompson and ex-husband, Jerry Hicks; and special friend, Jessie Groninger.

Along with her parents and previous husband, Ellen was preceded in death by a son, Tony Gerner; twins: Eugene Monroe Gerner and Jeanne Ellen Gerner; granddaughter, Annette Gerner Fender; two brothers: Buddy Smith and Marvin Smith, Jr.; and one sister, Peggy Gerner.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 3:00 PM at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Kimesville Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be on Friday evening at Lowe Funeral Home from 6-8:00 PM.
