Kitty Bass

Louise Kitturah Rook Bass was born on March 29,1923, and passed away on November 13, 2020, at the age of 97. Her physical health was good until the last couple weeks of her life. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Leon Bass; her parents, Theodore Edward Rook and Mabel Throckmorton Rook, and two brothers and two sisters. Fondly known by everyone as Miss Kitty, she was the life of the party wherever she went. She graduated from Gibsonville High School and then attended Elon College, where she met her husband of 62 years. She had brief periods of employment at Western Electric Company in Burlington, North Carolina, and the Cruikshank Insurance Agency in Newport News, Virginia; but once she became a mother, her focus was on managing her home and caring for her family.

They moved to Western Pennsylvania, settling in Pittsburgh where they made lifelong friends. They lived in that area until they retired and moved back to Elon where she quickly renewed old friendships and made hundreds of new ones in addition to being near family members again. She loved to travel and went as often as she could—going to all 50 states, Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and several cruises in both the Western Caribbean and Eastern Caribbean. She was an avid Bridge player and quickly joined a group here. When she moved to The Hamlet in Elon, she played Dominoes with new friends she met there. She attended St. Mark’s Church regularly. Mondays were spent with her niece, Kathy Sykes, going on day trips, eating out, visiting relatives and shopping. She lit up a room when she came in and had a ready laugh which she shared freely.

As her need for more assistance progressed, she moved to Blakey Hall and then to Twin Lakes Coble Health Care Center. Her family feels blessed that she was so loved and cared for in each of these facilities. Her upbeat attitude and infectious laugh made her very popular with the staff.

She is survived by her sons: Thomas Leon Bass, Jr. (Sandy) and Terry Edward Bass(Nancy); her grandchildren: Thomas Leon (Tripp) Bass III (Crystal), Jeremy R. Bass, David Bass (Katie), Eric Bass (Richelle), and Andrew Bass (Carolyn): great grandchildren Thomas Leon Bass IV, Maggie Kitturah Bass, Brayden Bass, Cameron Bass, Emilia Bass, and Evan Shanks.

She will be available for viewing from 1:00-5:00 PM Monday and 8:00-11:45 AM Tuesday.  Her service will be private but may be viewed online after 4:00 PM Tuesday.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark’s Church, 1230 St. Mark’s Church Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
