BURLINGTON- Leonard Rudolph Matherly, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at Alamance Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born in Rockingham County on July 28, 1932 to the late Leonard Spencer and Nellie Harris Matherly and was the husband of 60 years to Erma Smith Matherly of the home.
Leonard was a US Army Veteran and attended St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. He retired from Glen Raven Mills and was a member of the Alamance Jazz Band and the Lakeview Civitan. He loved jazz music and enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters.
He is survived by his wife, Erma; daughter, Karla Stanley and husband Todd; grandchildren, Makenna, Schyler and Leara Stanley; brothers, Bill Matherly (Caroline), Johnny Matherly (Brenda), H.B. Matherly (Brenda), Curtis Matherly (Joy), Robert Matherly (Lisa); sisters, Estelle Gillespie, Juanita Smith, Janet Poole (Randy), Linda Faye Boyer, Dee Matherly and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank Matherly, Tom Matherly; sisters, Delphine Simpson, Betty Jean Futrell, Rhelma, Patricia and Harriet Matherly.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Tommy Privette with the burial to follow at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:45 prior to the service at Lowe Funeral Home and other times at the home.
