Oscar Cloninger, Jr.

Mr. Oscar Deaton “Top” Cloninger, Jr., age 76, of Burlington, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Durham after a brief illness.

Born in Mecklenburg County, he was the son of the late Oscar Deaton Cloniger, Sr. and the late Gertrude Best Cloninger and was married for over 30 years to Mrs. Sherry White Cloninger, who survives.  Oscar was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War.  He was a career dairy and tobacco farmer and was of the Lutheran faith.

Mr. Cloninger is survived by his wife of the home; two step children, Kimberly Dawn (Chris) James and Richard Burton James; five grandchildren, Caylee (John), Cameron, Skyler, Kevin and Ashley; two great grandchildren, Aiden and Wyatt; a sister Ruth Hopkins; a brother, Mack Cloninger; and many nieces, nephews and friends he considered family.  He was preceded in death by his step daughter, Jana Michele Morton; grandson Seth Oakley; his parents; five brothers; and a sister.

The family will be receiving friends from 3:00 - 6:00 PM Friday, March 20, 2020 at their residence.
